Overview

The ASEAN BioDiaspora project, spearheaded by Indonesia as the lead country, obtained its endorsement as part of the ASEAN–Canada Partnership Program in 2014 by the ASEAN Expert Group on Communicable Diseases (AEGCD). It was subsequently endorsed by the ASEAN Senior Official Meeting on Health Development (SOMHD). The project is also included as an activity under the ASEAN Health Cluster 2 Work Programme “Responding to All Hazards and Emerging Threats” (2016–2020).

The ASEAN BioDiaspora project aims to strengthen ASEAN preparedness and response to biological threats by enhancing regional capacity in big data analytics and visualization. Its main objective is to build regional capacity in predictive analytics that improves ASEAN’s epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response capabilities.

In terms of implementation, the project is supported by BlueDot Inc. as the implementing agency, with Indonesia as the lead country. BlueDot provides technical expertise and supports the development of a web-based, ASEAN-customized application for risk assessment, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) analytical tools and relevant data.

Indonesia, as the lead country, serves as the Project Management Team (PMT) responsible for daily project implementation and administrative arrangements. The PMT, headed by a Project Coordinator based in Jakarta, works closely with the project’s main proponent, the Ministry of Health of Indonesia.
