Global Update

• Worldwide, there have been over 236 million cases and over 4 million deaths attributed to COVID-19.

• According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of September 28, all regions continued to report a substantial decline in weekly new cases. Globally, there was a 10% decline in both new COVID-19 cases and deaths reported between September 20 to 26 compared to the prior week. The largest decrease in weekly new cases was reported by the Eastern Mediterranean Region (17%), followed by the Western Pacific Region (15%), the Region of the Americas (14%), the African Region (12%), and the South-East Asia Region (10%). Based on the BlueDot COVID-19 Data Suite, as of September 30, the top five countries with the highest seven-day rolling average number of daily new cases are the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, India, and Russia. The top five countries with the highest seven-day rolling average number of daily new cases per million population are New Caledonia, Serbia, Bermuda, Guyana, and Mongolia. As of September 30, Oceania is the region with the largest proportion of countries (50%, or eight out of 16) with a high incidence rate (>350 cases per 100,000 over the past 14 days) and a stable or increasing trend in daily new cases over the last seven days. Europe has the highest proportion of countries (27%, or eight out of 51) with a low (<=140 cases) to moderate (140.1 - 350 cases) incidence rate and an increasing trend in new cases over the last seven days. North America is the continent with the highest proportion of countries (15%, or six out of 41) reporting a moderate incidence rate (140.1 -350) with a stable trend in new cases over the last week. Africa is the continent with the highest proportion of countries (71%, or 40 out of 56) reporting a low incidence rate (<= 140 cases) with a stable or decreasing trend in new cases over the last week, followed by South America (57%, eight out of 14).
