Top diplomats of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations linked
up through a video meeting led by Vietnam last April 9. The move came
following growing indications that the regional organization was looking to step
up its response to COVID-19. The ministers endorsed several collective steps to
fight the pandemic, including the establishment of a COVID-19 ASEAN
response fund, the sharing of information, and strategies and ways to ease the
impact of the global health crisis on people and the economy.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has sponsored a COVID-19 training
session for over 30 Lao medical professionals from central and district hospitals
in Vientiane Capital. On 11 April, WHO experts held a training session for 30
Vientiane medical professionals on how to properly manage and treat COVID19 patients. The professionals were also trained on how to utilize personal
protective equipment (PPE). It is expected that the medical staff from
Vientiane will pass on the knowledge to their counterparts in provincial
hospitals around the country.
Malaysia government has decided to further extend the movement control
order (MCO) by another 14 days until Apr 28.
Last April 12, Indonesia decided to extend the area of the large-scale social
restrictions to West Java province which has the biggest population in the
country as the number of the COVID-19) cases spikes. The large-scale
restrictions will be applied on the provincial towns of Bekasi, Depok and Bogor
that share borders with the country's capital of Jakarta which has imposed the
restrictions since April 10. The restrictions will initiate this Wednesday (April 15
Myanmar’s Health and Sports Ministry issued a release last April 11, stating that
the quarantine period will be extended to 28 days which include 21-day facility
quarantine and 7-day home quarantine.
