  • Worldwide, there have been over 19.9 million reported cases, and more than 732,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Since the 1st confirmed COVID-19 case in the Region of the Americas (21 January 2020), there have been more than 10.1 million cumulative cases, including over 360,000 COVID-19 associated deaths. The Region of the Americas has become a worldwide hotspot. According to an official report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), between July 2 - August 2, there was a 77% increase in the number of cases and a 42% increase in the number of deaths in comparison to the period beginning with the first reported case on January 21 until July 1. The largest relative increases in cases and deaths have occurred in the subregions of Central America (130% increase in cases and 142% increase in deaths), followed by the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean Islands (98% increase in cases and 48% increase in deaths), and South America (82% increase in cases and 67% increase in deaths). Between July 2 - August 2, the highest proportions of new cases have been reported in the Bahamas (476%), Costa Rica (385%), the United States (US) Virgin Islands (376%), and Saint Pierre and Miquelon (300%), while the highest proportions of new deaths were reported in Costa Rica (863%), Venezuela (213%), and Colombia (198%). Furthermore, seven countries and territories have observed an increase in their transmission scenarios, with Costa Rica, Sint Maarten, Suriname, and the US Virgin Islands reporting community transmission for the first time. Trinidad and Tobago have reported clusters of cases, from previously seeing sporadic cases, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba Islands, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon Islands have reported their first sporadic cases since the beginning of the global pandemic.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has published guidance on the public health surveillance of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in humans caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2). This document combines and supersedes the Global surveillance guidance for COVID-19 caused by human infection with COVID-19 virus: Interim guidance, and Surveillance strategies for COVID-19 human infection: Interim Guidance 10 May 2020.
  • Brunei reported one new case of COVID-19 on Friday (August 7), breaking the 92-day record without new cases since May 7 and bringing the national total number of COVID-19 cases to 142. According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, Case 142 is a 24 years old local male who studied in Yemen and returned to Brunei on August 5 via Kuala Lumpur. Although reportedly suffered from shortness of breath on August 6, he is currently in a stable condition and is being treated at the National Isolation Center.
