The WHO Director-General highlighted in his media briefing yesterday that the
chronic global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the
most urgent threats to our collective ability to save lives. To date, WHO has
shipped almost 2 million individual items of PPE to 74 countries and is preparing
to send a similar amount to a further 60 countries.
On March 28, WHO published the first edition of the practical manual to set up
and manage a severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) treatment centre and
a SARI screening facility in health-care facilities. The document has been
developed to meet the operational needs emerging with the COVID-19
pandemic.
On March 28 and 29, Brunei assisted Malaysia with the repatriation of 84
Malaysians who were stranded in Cairo. Malaysia on the other hand assisted
Brunei with the repatriation of 134 Bruneians who were stranded in Kuala
Lumpur. The special and strong 🇲🇾🇧🇳 bilateral ties has made this collaboration
possible. The first flight arrived on Saturday morning carrying 236 students, while
the second flight arrived on Sunday morning carrying 131 Bruneian students as
well as 84 Malaysians stranded in Egypt. The Malaysian contingent from Cairo
flew back to Kuala Lumpur on March 29, accompanied by another 25
Malaysian nationals who were stranded in Brunei.
The Indonesian capital of Jakarta has extended its state of emergency as the
number of Covid-19 cases has surged across the country. Initially, the state of
emergency status was first imposed on March 20 and was expected to end on
April 5. On March 29, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced that the
state of emergency will have a two-week extension until April 19.
A team of Chinese medical experts, along with medical materials, arrived in
Lao capital Vientiane by a chartered plane on March 29 morning to assist Laos
fight the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese medical team include experts in
various fields such as infection prevention and control, intensive care,
epidemics, and laboratory testing.
On March 29, Government Spokesperson and Minister to the Prime Minister’s
Office Chalern Yapaoher headed a press conference to outline the details of
the Prime Minister’s Order regarding the country’s new and upgraded COVID19 regulations. This order include: a) Public servants (state workers) are to work
from home April 1-11, and will be on holiday leave to observe the Lao New
Year holiday until April 19, except for military and police officers, firefighters,
water and electrical (utilities) company staff, media personnel, doctors and
nurses, volunteers, and other individuals that have been authorized to remain
at work to combat the spread of the disease; b) prohibition for all people
(nationals, expatriates, stateless individuals) to leave their homes or domiciles
except for buying necessities; c) prohibition for people to travel to other
provinces or areas where there are known infected cases or at-risk areas; d)
prohibited to either hoard or to increase the price of essential goods that are
necessary for virus prevention (i.e. mask, alcohol, etc.); d) prohibition to spread
news and information that are false, misleading, and engendering societal
panic; e) prohibited to organize gatherings of any sort of more than 10 people;
f) all entertainment venues must remain closed. The order will take effect
starting Monday, Mar 30 until April 19, or until further notice.
Malaysia’s Movement Control Order (MCO) period will be extended from
March 31 to April 14 as the local death toll from the virus rises
Singapore government donated 40,000 COVID-19 diagnostic tests and two
ventilators to the Philippines. These additional test kits will supplement
Singapore’s earlier donation to allow more people to have an early diagnosis,
while the ventilators will be crucial for the survival of severe COVID-19 cases.
