Worldwide, there have been over 16.2 million reported cases, and over 649,000
deaths attributed to COVID-19. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), more than 1 million cases have been recorded weekly since the last
week of June. Globally, the largest single-day increase was reported on July
24, with over 280,000 new cases. This rise in cases has been mostly driven by
community transmission of the virus in large and populous countries within the
Americas and South Asian regions. The United States remains the country with
the highest cumulative reported cases and, on July 24, reported, for the
second consecutive day, the largest single-day increase with over 70,000 new
infections and more than 1,000 new deaths. In addition, this week, India and
Brazil reported record-high single-day increases in cases.
The Banten Provincial Administration in Indonesia has, once again, extended
large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) until August 8. According to authorities,
Banten province now ranks 13th after previously ranking 12th a week ago on
the national [COVID-19] transmission ranking with 1,719 cases as of July 25.
Meanwhile, a government authority has announced that Bali island will reopen
its borders for international tourists on September 11 under strict health
protocol. It was explained that the Bali administration had prepared a threephase plan on relaxing restrictions to welcome tourists to the island. The first
phase started on July 9 when the administration began reopening local
businesses and tourist spots for residents of Bali. Third phase would be launched
on September 11 including opening of borders for international tourists.
The Lao Ministry of Health reported one new case of COVID-19 on Friday (July
24) for the first time in 102 days. According to the Ministry, the new case is a
South Korean man, who is a staff of a hydropower project in Laos. The 32-yearold patient travelled from Japan and transited through South Korea on July 18,
and arrived in Laos on the same day
