  • Worldwide, there have been over 23.9 million cases and more than 820,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Recently, a preview published in Cell reported findings of a mutated SARS-CoV-2 variant named D614G, which is becoming dominant around the world. With many Asian countries now experiencing a resurgence in cases, Malaysia has reported on August 16 that the mutation was detected in four new cases in the country. The mutated strain was also detected in the neighbouring Philippines, which is now seeing the worst outbreak in Southeast Asia. According to the research preview, there is so far no evidence to suggest that the D614G mutation will result in a more severe infection of the COVID-19 disease. Clinical data suggest that D614G changes the virus phenotype, but the impact of the mutation on transmission, disease, vaccine, and therapeutic development remains largely unknown. More extensive research is underway to understand how the D614G mutated strain will impact the pandemic.
  • Brunei reported one new imported case of COVID-19 on Tuesday (August 25), bringing the national total COVID-19 cases to 144. According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, the case is a 36-year-old male arriving in Brunei on August 19 from abroad. The man reportedly had a fever upon arrival but no longer showed any signs of infection at present and is currently being treated at the National Isolation Center. The Ministry of Health has identified a total of 19 contacts, of which 14 have undergone the COVID-19 swab test and were confirmed negative, while the rest are still awaiting test results.
  • Da Nang city (Vietnam) authorities will continue to issue ‘market passes’, which allow local residents to go shopping at traditional markets for odd or even days, for residents for another 15-day period from August 27 until further notice, in a bid to limit crowds and gatherings
