  • WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros, in his regular media briefing, cautioned that “we have a long way to go. This virus will be with us for a long time”. He added that “the world cannot go back to the way things were. There must be a “new normal” – a world that is healthier, safer and better prepared”.
  • The Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) has launched a GOARN COVID-19 Knowledge hub. The hub is designed as a central repository of quality public health information, guidance, tools and webinars which can be accessed freely at any point.
  • Jakarta's administration will extend wide-scale social restrictions by four weeks as the number of Indonesia's COVID-19 cases approached to more than 7000. The large-scale social distancing measures, which include a ban on gatherings of more than five people, limited public transport services and mandatory work-from-home, were extended until May 22.
  • The Philippine government will extend the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and "all other high risk" areas until May 15. The initial enhanced community quarantine is due to end on April 30.
  • Singapore’s Health Minister declared Tuas South Dormitory, Jurong Penjuru Dormitory 2, CDPL Tuas Dormitory and the 21B Senoko Loop dormitory as isolation areas under the Infectious Diseases Act. As of April 23, there are now 25 dormitories declared as isolation areas. MOH said foreign workers in dormitories still form most of the new coronavirus cases. The S11 Dormitory in Punggol remains Singapore’s largest active cluster with 2,234 confirmed cases. Accounting to almost 20% of all the cases.
  • Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health announced on April 23 that Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar have now been added to the list of countries and territories considered as high risk areas for infection.
  • Brunei received medical supplies from China on evening of April 23 through Royal Brunei Airline charter flight. These included 100,000 N95 respirators and 1,000 disposable isolation gowns, on Wednesday evening. The Chinese ambassador to Brunei and the Brunei's Minister of Health attended the handover ceremony and both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in containing and responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • As of 22 April, Japan changed the method of reporting deaths, which now includes both the number of (i) deceased cases with complete data matching and verification; and (ii) deceased cases whose data matching and verification are in progress. The notable increase in the number of deaths reported from Japan can be attributed to this change.
