  • Worldwide, there have been over 31.6 million cases and more than 972,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. According to the BlueDot COVID-19 Data Suite, the continent with the highest proportion of countries reporting either moderate or high increasing rates of new cases over the previous seven days is Europe. Of the 51 countries currently monitored by BlueDot in Europe, 12 (23.5%) are reporting high rates of increasing cases including the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Of the 48 Asian countries monitored, six (12.5%) are reporting high rates of increasing cases including Indonesia, Iran, and Pakistan. In North America, of the 41 countries monitored, four (9.8%) are reporting high rates of increasing cases, which are Canada, Honduras, and the United States. Alternatively, the continents with the highest proportion of countries reporting a decreasing rate of new cases are currently Africa (30.4% of the 56 countries monitored) and Asia (35.4% of the 48 countries monitored). Notable countries that are reporting a decreasing rate of new cases in the past week that were recently reporting high rates of increasing cases include Bolivia, Iraq, and Mexico. • Myanmar’s Ministry of Health and Sports announced on September 22 that the country has prepared more quarantine centers and taken measures to protect health workers from being infected with COVID-19 while on duty. The Myanmar military also warned on Tuesday that based on its estimates, the country’s COVID-19 cases could increase to over 16,000 by the end of the month if the spread is not contained within the week. • Member of Indonesia’s COVID-19 task force said that Indonesian health system might collapse if the public continues to ignore COVID-19 prevention protocols. He also said that the health system had been overwhelmed by the crisis and urged the public to comply with the health protocols in order to keep the nation’s health system in a stable condition by reducing the number of COVID19 patients. The Health Ministry reported 4,071 new confirmed cases on Tuesday (September 22), bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 252,923.
