  • Worldwide, there have been more than 8.2 million cases and over 445,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called the new cluster of cases in Beijing, the capital city in China, a “significant event”. As the outbreak continues to spread beyond the market, almost 30 neighborhoods are under lockdown in the city. and regions saw an increase in the number of cases and/or deaths.
  • World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, in his regular media briefing yesterday, stressed that “Despite the ongoing global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot lose sight of other significant public health issues, including influenza”. WHO urges countries to address the sharp decline in influenza surveillance and testing during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as the southern hemisphere enters the flu season.
  • WHO has also carefully investigated the risks of women transmitting COVID-19 to their babies during breastfeeding. Based on the available evidence, WHO’s advice is that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of COVID-19 (WHO Report No. 147).
  • Indonesia’s Education and Culture Ministry announced on June 16 that the country will allow phased reopening of schools located in COVID-19 low-risk areas, or “green zones” starting in July. In the press conference, national COVID-19 task force chief Doni Monardo said the task force had mapped the risk status of all regions in the country affected by the COVID-19 pandemic based on 15 indicators from the World Health Organization. The indicators, which comprise the number of new cases, suspects and fatalities among other things, determine whether the regions fall into the green, yellow, orange or red category. As of June 17, Indonesia’s COVID-19 cases has exceeded 40,000 with 1,106 new cases.
  • Philippine’s President said on Tuesday (June 16) that partial restrictions would remain in place in the capital Manila for another two weeks because the threat of COVID-19 is still present. However, restrictions were further eased in provinces and cities with low cases of the virus to help restore business activity.
  • Singapore moves to Phase Two of its reopening this Friday (June 19), as a range of restrictions will be eased to allow more business and social activities to resume.
