World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF),
and the International Federation of the Red Cross have published guidance for
countries on how to maintain community-based healthcare in the context of
COVID-19. It complements the United Nations framework for the socioeconomic response to COVID-19.
Indonesia and South Korea joined hands in COVID-19 response. The South
Korean government has pledged to donate USD 500,000 worth of test kits and
disinfectant sprayers to help Indonesia combat the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Thai Ministry of Public Health on May 6 told the media that medical
authorities had made progress in developing a vaccine for the COVID-19 after
laboratory trials of a prototype proved successful.
On May 7, Japan government authorized the antiviral drug remdesivir to treat
COVID-19 patients with an eye to approving another medication Avigan this
month. This makes Japan the second country to approve the drug after US
regulators authorized it last May 1 for emergency use against severe cases of
COVID-19.
South Korean health authorities raised new concerns about the novel
coronavirus after reporting last month that dozens of patients who had
recovered from the illness later tested positive again. The findings suggested
that some people who recovered from COVID-19 can be re-infected with the
SARS-CoV-2 and may potentially complicate efforts to lift quarantine
restrictions and produce a vaccine. According to KCDC, authorities are still
gathering evidence to support their theory that the particles are from "dead"
virus cells which will no longer pose a significant threat to the patient or others.
Philippines’ National Task Force COVID-19 announced today (May 8) that he
country now has the capacity to perform 12,000 tests a day for COVID-19 as it
tries to move closer to its goal of conducting 30,000 tests a day by May 30. The
government is also planning to set up additional 50 laboratories within May on
top of the 20 existing testing laboratories from the government and private
sector.
Central China's Hubei Province reports no new COVID-19 cases. This marked
that Hubei had reported no new case/s for 33 consecutive days since April 4.
Cambodia reports no new COVID-19 case/s for 26 days since April 12.
Laos reports no new COVID-19 case/s for 26 days since April 12.
