  • On May 4, the World Health Organization (WHO) Cambodia Country Representative warned that Cambodia remains at high risk of a second wave outbreak of COVID-19 even if Cambodia achieved a good response to the first phase COVID-19. She stated during the press conference in Phnom Penh that COVID-19 pandemic is far from over globally, including in Cambodia.
  • Malaysia begins to ease its COVID-19 lockdown. However, the move has split public opinion amid fears that a sudden reopening of economic activities could spark a new wave of infections. 9 of the country’s 13 states, however, have either refused to open up or restricted the types of businesses that can operate.
  • On May 4, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) donated medical equipment and accessories to a newly-built laboratory of Myanmar's military hospital for testing COVID-19.
  • An epidemiologist in the Philippines who is also part of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases said on May 5 that the country had already flattened the epidemic curve nearly two months after the government placed the nation on lockdown. Before the government put major parts of the country on lockdown in March, the average case doubling time nationwide was 2.5 days. Now, the average doubling time was 4.6 days, with Luzon (excluding Metro Manila) having the longest doubling time — 5.8 days. However, according to the Health Undersecretary, people should not become complacent considering that resurgence may occur if the restrictions shall be lifted.
  • Brunei reports no new COVID-19 case/s since for 17 days since April 19.
  • Cambodia reports no new COVID-19 case/s for 24 days since April 12.
  • Laos reports no new COVID-19 case/s for 24 days since April 12.
  • More Singapore-based companies are working to produce COVID-19 test kits. The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has granted provisional approval for more than 20 companies to produce kits locally. The country has indicated plans to increase daily testing capacity to 40,000.
  • On May 5, Vietnam authorities lifted the lockdown on Ha Loi hamlet of Me Linh rural district of Hanoi.
  • Japan extended its state of emergency over the coronavirus until May 31 as the government warned it was too soon to lift restrictions. The area covered all prefectures in the nation.
