  • Worldwide, there have been over 25.8 million cases and more than 857,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19. The countries most affected by the virus globally include the United States (>6.2 million), Brazil (>3.9 million), and India (>3.7 million). Cases have been rising exponentially in India. The country took almost six months to reach 1 million cumulative cases, another three weeks to reach 2 million, and only 16 additional days to reach 3 million. In addition, on August 31, AstraZeneca announced they had started Phase 3 trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the United States, thereby becoming the third company to start late-stage trials of a SARS-CoV2 vaccine in the United States. AstraZeneca’s Phase 3 trials are currently ongoing in Britain, Brazil, and South Africa with further trials planned for Japan and Russia. In addition, rivals Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech have already begun Phase 3 trials of their vaccine candidates in the United States. Furthermore, another vaccine candidate developed by Sinovac Biotech, a private company in China, has been granted emergency use as part of a program in China to vaccinate highrisk groups such as medical staff.
  • The Philippines’ President announced on Monday night (August 31) that Metro Manila will remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) until September 30. Researchers studying the pandemic in the country observed that cases are still increasing in the country, though at an average of some 3,721 cases per day from August 23 to 29 is lower than the 4,000 new cases reported daily from August 2 to 22. Starting September 1, the community quarantine levels across the country will last for a month, instead of just two weeks. The GCQ that will be implemented starting September will be less strict than the GCQ implemented from August 19 to 31. Non-contact gyms, drive-in cinemas, internet cafes, as well as personal grooming services were once again allowed to operate in areas under GCQ since yesterday (September 1). The Philippines now has 224,264 confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease – the highest in Southeast Asia – as the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,483 new cases on Tuesday, September 1.
  • Myanmar’s Ministry of Health and Sports has reported 32 new COVID-19 cases on September 1, bringing the total number of cases to 919. The ministry has announced on September 1 that 7 townships in the commercial capital (Thingangyun, Insein, North Okkalapa, Thaketa, Hlaing, Pazundaung and Mingaladon) will have to follow stay-home-orders which will be effective today at 8:00AM.
