On October 2, 2026, health authorities in the Russian Federation reported the death of a 28- year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute following suspected occupational exposure to pneumonic plague. The patient developed severe pneumonia and was hospitalized on September 30 before dying despite intensive medical care. On October 4, Investigators found no pathogens related to plague.
