ABVC Media Monitoring for Infectious and Emerging Diseases - 23 October 2024

This report is the result of media monitoring on infectious and emerging diseases happening around the world and among the ASEAN Member States. In order to improve pandemic and epidemic preparedness and response in the ASEAN Region, we provide this report three times a week starting from January 2024. Global Situation Mpox • Germany has reported its first case of mpox caused by a more virulent variant, causing a massive outbreak in Africa (Soucheray, 2024). The case-patient recently traveled abroad. Germany is now the third country outside of Africa to report infections with what is being called mpox clade 1b. [Full article] • The Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a decrease in Mpox cases, with over 39,070 people vaccinated (Lomba, 2024). The fatality rate has dropped from 1.20% to 0.0014%. The country has 30 health zones, with 11 already started vaccination campaign and 19 expected to start soon. [Full article] Dengue • Bangladesh has reported seven additional deaths from dengue, raising the total to 257 this year (United News of Bangladesh, 2024). Over 1,139 patients were hospitalized with viral fever, with 3,838 receiving treatments. This year, a total of 52,058 cases have been reported. [Full article] • China: The Guangzhou Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported 497 new cases of dengue fever from October 14-20, an increase of 60 cases from the previous week (Minjie , 2024). A total of 431 local cases were reported, with 136 in Baiyun, 85 in Panyu, 63 in Liwan, 37 in Yuexiu, 35 in Huadu, 27 in Tianhe, 26 in Haizhu, nine in Zengcheng, nine in Nansha, three in Conghua, and one in Huangpu District. There were 66 imported cases, including 60 cases from other cities in the province. [Full article] • India: An 18-year-old girl died from dengue during treatment at Kota's Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital, increasing the total death to two (The Times of India, 2024). The city has recorded 283 dengue patients. No dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment in the ward, although there are patients in the Outpatient Department (OPD). [Full article]
