ABVC Measles in The ASEAN Region Focus Report 2025

Time Period Covered March 28, 2025 - March 28, 2025

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets from an infected person when they breathe, cough or sneeze. Measles can cause severe complications and, in some cases, death. Measles can affect individuals of any age, but it is most common in children. Vaccination remains the most effective strategy to prevent measles infection and transmission. Prior to the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963 and the subsequent expansion of immunization programs, major measles epidemics occurred approximately every two to three years, resulting in approximately 2.6 million deaths annually (WHO,2024a). Countries around the world, including ASEAN member states, have a vision and mission to achieve elimination in the WHO Southeast Asia Region by 2026, as outlined in the WHO Southeast Asia Regional Vaccine Implementation Plan 2022-2026. This report provides an overview of measles, including its transmission, symptoms, and treatment, as well as current data on incidence and mortality. It also focuses on the regional situation within ASEAN, analysing the impact of the disease and the region's collective efforts to control it through surveillance, rapid response, and public health initiatives. Through this focus, the aim of the report aims to highlight the critical role of prevention and preparedness in reducing the burden of measles across vulnerable populations.
