ABVC Annual Hepatitis Focus Report – 26 October 2023

Viral hepatitis poses a significant public health challenge worldwide, with an estimated three (3) million new infections occurring annually. This infectious disease is caused by five different hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, D, and E) and can lead to acute or chronic liver inflammation, resulting in severe health complications. While hepatitis virus B and C are more responsible for chronic progression in liver diseases.[1] While efforts to combat hepatitis have been undertaken globally, substantial progress has been made in reducing its prevalence through massive immunization programs. Vaccination campaigns have played a pivotal role in curbing the spread of hepatitis, particularly for hepatitis B, which has witnessed a decline in new cases. Comprehensive vaccination strategies have contributed to the control of hepatitis, especially in regions with high disease burdens.[2] However, despite this achievement, the decline in prevalence has not been matched by a proportionate decrease in mortality rates, indicating that more targeted approaches are needed to address this persisting issue.[3] This situation has deviated far from the hepatitis eradication target set before.
